Canterbury Student Accommodation

Canterbury

LHC were commissioned by Empiric Student Property to design a 172-bed student apartment scheme on the site of a former Franciscan International Study Centre. The scheme included part-retention of existing buildings along with new build accommodation. Mature landscape to the north backs onto ancient woodland. Existing buildings are typical of their period – flat roofed and built from exposed concrete and brick, and would be part retained to provide an communal facility for students.

As yet unrealised, the new build apartment blocks have been placed to work with the existing site plan and retained mature landscape, whilst also creating new welcoming entrance piazza and spaces which are easy to navigate for new students. Materially the whole site is unified by the use of natural building materials like brick and timber and a series of new contemporary landscaped courtyards between buildings.
