The development will have a distinct identity which has been influenced by the local character found in and around the town to create a sense of place that has some connection with Okehampton whilst maintaining a contemporary aesthetic.
Urban Design & Masterplanning
The character of the place – Streets and plots and contours
The master plan has been laid out using a simple street hierarchy which enables the development to be navigable and importantly work well with the challenging topography which is very much in keeping with the historic urban grain of the town. This hierarchy will form an integrated approach with the articulation of dwellings to provide subtle character to different areas of the development as a whole to create a sense of place.
Sustainability forms an integral aspect of the design, maximising the use of passive techniques to ensure that properties are orientated south to maximise the use of solar gain, natural daylight and roof profiles for potential renewable technologies.
Proposed materials will consist of a simple palette to reflect the inherent nature of Okehampton itself. This will predominately consist of render with the subtle use of brick and vertical tile hanging to create variety, richness and warmth as well as reinforcing the overall principles of the master plan and street hierarchy.
Enhanced soft landscaping and native hedgerow planting will assist in softening the edges of the proposed development providing a natural boundary to the scheme.
