March 2008 – Planning consent for next Devonport transformation
Phase One of the regeneration of the Ker Street area of Devonport, designed by LHC Urbanism and LHC Architecture has gained planning approval. Undertaken on behalf of Westco and Midas Homes, in partnership with key stakeholders including the Devonport Regeneration Community Partnership, Plymouth City Council and the Devon and Cornwall Housing Association, the project aims to reconnect Devonport and transform it to a balanced and sustainable community.
Replacing the existing depressingly drab grey post war flats, the £8 million Ker Street Phase One scheme proposes 62 new homes. Comprising a combination of different sized houses with gardens and apartments, including 30 affordable units, each is designed to minimise their carbon footprint as much as possible within the overall constraints of the project, with all affordable units being built to achieve EcoHomes Very Good.
Demolition is due to start in spring with construction beginning in the summer 2008.
Ker Street is close to LHC's award winning development at Gun Wharf, which kick-started the regeneration of Devonport in 2006.
