March 2008 – LHC’s Mark Daley designs luxury apartments for Newquay
Construction starts soon on Pearl, a luxury residential scheme forming part of the Newquay promenade regeneration. The building is one of four new developments along Headland Road, the gateway to surfing mecca, Fistral Beach, all designed by the LHC Architecture's Mark Daley.
In addition to Pearl, Headland Road will soon feature the ‘book ends', No.34 and Zinc, and a new building at No. 24.
Pearl is a symmetrical linear block, with the 4th floor penthouses level set back, reducing the scale of the storey and giving the impression of being the top of a lighthouse. Luxuriously designed, the two Pearl penthouses will offer a huge split level living space and terrace areas to make the most of the lifestyle on offer here. Outstanding views over Fistral Beach and the North Cornwall coastline will be maximized with floor to ceiling windows. The exceptional specification on the 4th floor terraces will ensure the ultimate in beachfront living.
Next to Pearl and probably the most important site of the promenade, 34 Headland Road, will feature a curved, copper ‘shell inspired' building sweeping from the Headland Road elevation towards its northern boundary, opening up the views towards the headland and the Victorian hotel beyond. No. 34 is designed to be a major focal point for the Fistral and Towan Head area providing a 'full stop' to Headland Road as well as marking the access to Fistral Beach. Crisp, neat detailing of large glazed screens and walkways contrast with the rusticated texture of the dynamically 'levitated' copper wedge.
Zinc provides 52 apartments over five storeys. A simple rhythm of projecting full height bays compliments the historic terraced properties in Newquay. Inspiration was taken from the art of Ben Nicholson who led the first generation of modern artists in Britain and was a key member of the St Ives School. His art and sculpture were heavily influenced by the geometric abstraction movement, and it is this architectural quality and form, along with the cool, harmonious colours and subtle textures within his work that have influenced the design and materials choice for Zinc.
The fourth development, 24 Headland Road, is currently in pre-planning stages.
