Awards presented to our winning students by RIBA President

Two of our fabulous work experience students, Tara and Hannah, were presented with their winning certificates by RIBA President, Ben Derbyshire, during his tour of the South West. They each won their category in the RIBA South West ‘Inette Austin-Smith’ competition for students.

Last summer LHC welcomed experience students from local schools to offer an insight into the workings of an architectural practice. Throughout their week of work experience the students designed an entry for the RIBA work experience competition. The students received mentoring throughout the week from members of the LHC teams.

The RIBA competition is intended to be a potted version of a typical architect’s commission. It is designed to encompass all the processes from taking a client’s brief, studying the requirements and constraints, researching background and precedents, creating a design concept, developing the design and finally communicating it… all in a week!

The brief for 2017 was to design a contemporary performance stage/stand for community use on Brunel Green, on the bank of the River Tamar. The site lies just north of the famous Royal Albert Bridge which carries the mainline trains into Cornwall.

The students rose to the challenge and grappled with the brief and submission requirements throughout the week to produce some very impressive proposals. A special mention and congratulations go out to Tara Hodges of Combe Dean School, Plymouth and Hannah Jones of Queen Elizabeth’s School, Crediton who both achieved 1st place with the highest scores in their categories. Congratulations!

The standard of the work was very impressive with the other two students in attendance receiving a highly commended for their proposals.

LHC is proud to offer mentoring to the students and be a part of this RIBA work experience competition, which is open to all school aged work experience students in Devon and Cornwall. We look forward to welcoming our 2018 cohort.
